About Us

A native of Madison, MS, Angela (Barnes) Filzen received her formal education in Mississippi. She is a graduate of Tougaloo College (Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology); Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry (Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree) and received a certificate of training completion from Meharry Medical College, General Practice Residency Program (where she served as Chief Resident during her tenure).

Early in life, Angela realized that helping others was a part of achieving success. As such, she was awarded a scholarship with the National Health Service Corps and completed her service by working in medically underserved and underinsured communities in Houston, Texas [Federal Qualified Community Health Center settings]. Very passionate about the importance of oral health to overall health and interprofessional collaborative practice where integration of care is central, Angela relocated to Mississippi to continue this great work.

Angela’s practice in community health centers and private practice dental settings exposed her to the significance of well-defined policies, processes and protocols to assure quality. She has participated in numerous leadership training curriculums and successfully led many teams during her career. A very passionate individual and one who is committed her life to the betterment of others, Angela is connected to her community and active in numerous coalitions throughout the state.

At her core is her faith and value of others. She is a published author and an Associate Minister at Norman Chapel M.B. Church in Jackson MS. She credits her faith, perseverance and passion to the fireside trainings of her parents Reverend Holiness Barnes Jr and Betty Barnes. She is a loving wife (Mark) mother (Chris and Mason) sister and friend to those who know her best.

In her spare time, Angela likes to spend time with family, write, and travel.
